Travel vaccinations protocol (December 2007)
1. Patients must find out which vaccinations they require. They can do this by going online to Fit for Travel (http://www.fitfortravel.scot.nhs.uk/), or by ringing the BMC Travel Clinic (01233 503666). Do not make an appointment to see anyone for holiday vaccinations until you have checked what you need.
2. Reception staff can tell you which vaccinations you have had in the past, but they can’t tell you which ones you require or how long you are covered for.
3. The vaccines we carry at the surgery are Diptheria/Tetanus/Polio, Hepatitis A and Typhoid. These are the only ones available on the NHS, and the only ones we administer. If you require any private vaccinations (the most common ones are Rabies, Hepatitis B, Malaria and Yellow Fever) you will have to go to a travel clinic – for example the BMC Travel Clinic (01233 503666).
4. If you are unsure, even after getting advice from the agencies above, what vaccinations you require, and would like to talk it over, then you will need an appointment with the Doctor or the Practice Nurse.
5. If you need your travel vaccinations sorting out urgently, because you are going abroad at short notice, you are advised to go to a private travel clinic, because travel vaccinations are only available on a non-urgent basis via the NHS.
6. Patients having immunisations elsewhere are advised to let us know what they’ve had, so that the information can be recorded on their notes.
